Advances in Technology-based Education: towards a Knowledge Based Society

This paper describes an intelligent exploratory learning environment based on an architecture that allows students to analyze examples by exploring the reasoning of an expert system that embodies the domain topic knowledge. The domain is that of entity relation diagramming (ERD), a database modeling technique. The system presents the student with a series of English descriptions of database situations, and two alternative diagrams that purport to represent each situation. Students are asked to evaluate the diagrams to determine which is better and whether each represents an acceptable interpretation of the situation. Students are able to query the system regarding not only the actions that the expert system would take, given the described situation, but also why certain actions would not be taken. This system is based on a general framework developed to enable flexible querying of intelligent systems, including tutoring systems, expert systems, and expert system development environments.
